Recession claims another casualty

Ekta Kapoor, who was planning to expand her TV empire by launching a television channel this year, has put her plans on the backburner. The channel in question would have aired fiction and reality shows. Ekta had decided to start the channel about a year ago, after friction with Star India. Differences cropped up between the television content producer Balaji Telefilms Ltd and Rupert Murdoch’s broadcast network Star Group Ltd owing to the delay in launching regional channels under a joint venture. As of now, Balaji has no shows on Star.
Ekta is said to have invested in the necessary spadework for her Hindi entertainment channel and is also supposed to have applied for a license for the same from the Information & Broadcasting Ministry.

Apparently, the recession has put a spanner in the works. Our source said, “These days, most broadcasters are not making good money because of the recession. The TRPs of most shows have dropped and ditto for the ad revenue. In such a scenario, it is not prudent for anybody to start a big enterprise like a TV channel. This was a business decision taken by her company. But once the market gets back to normal, Ekta will be launching the channel.”
