Sudesh Berry isn’t like Loha Singh

Sudesh Berry made his entry as the strict Loha Singh on Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo (Zee TV) this Thursday and he is thrilled with the great response he’s been getting for the role. The actor previously played a dual personality on Mata Ki Chowki (Sahara One). We caught up with him to find out how he likes the new job as well as his take on the show’s subject: ill treatment of women.
How do you like working on Agle Janam?
It is the same unit as Mata Ki Chowki so there is no problem at all. We were already like a family on Mata Ki Chowki so it is the same here. And it’s always fun and challenging to play different roles.

What inspired you to take up this offer?
I’ve always been very choosy about my roles. I take up characters whose eyes and expressions speak the most; roles that don’t require much talking. And this is what I am doing here.

Tell us about your character.
I can define him in one sentence: Sarkar kisi ki bhi ho, topi hamare hi sar par honi chahiye. I play Loha Singh, a very stern man. He is not scared of anyone, not even his father! You can call it a gray, black or white character. There are three people who are known to be great: Alexander, Ashoka and Akbar. Now, Loha Singh is the fourth.

Are there any similarities between you and your character?
Absolutely not! There are no similarities… main Bandar hoon, Loha Singh sher hai. Loha Singh has emerged from Sudesh Berry.

You are also seen with a very different look on the serial…Yes, it is very different from my look in Mata Ki Chowki. I have a big moustache and a proper thakur ka look. It’s not too unusual though. Even so, I’ve got a lot of compliments for it.

How did you manage to learn the language and those mannerisms?
Lalu ji se prerna mili hai… For the language and mannerisms, I have a special teacher, Shashi Pathak, who helps me in every possible way.

Have you heard of any incidents that are similar to the story of your show?
I’ve heard of many stories like this. In many parts of UP and Bihar, girls are still not sent to school. In fact, I’ve even heard that in the south, when a girl child is born, she is killed in a tub full of water. There are many such rituals that are still followed in our country. We should understand that a girl is a goddess and she is the one who gives birth to a man.

Do you think this discrimination will ever vanish from our society?
Jab paap ka ghada bhar jaata hai, tab buraai ka ant nishchit hai… Double standards are very common in rural areas even now. These discriminations will end when an avatar of Vishnu is born; this will happen very soon.

How have the responses to the show been?
I made my entry this Thursday and the response so far has been wonderful. If God continues to shower his blessings on me, good responses will keep coming.

Are you working on any movies?
I have three movies releasing this year. There is 99, which will release on May 8. I also make an appearance on Total 10, releasing next month. But the most prominent movie I have is Shabaash- You Can Do It, which releases this Diwali.

Sudesh Berry made his entrance on Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo last Thursday. The show airs every Monday to Thursday at 9:30pm on Zee TV.
