Televisions most popular bahu, Smriti Malhotra Irani stepped into politics six years ago when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. She contested for the elections in 2004 from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk constituency but lost. With elections just around the corner, we find out what Irani is up to this time.TALKING about her future in the BJP, Smriti says, “I am currently the National Secretary of the BJP and my future is wide open.â€Prodded for more details, the actress says, “I am canvassing throughout the country.” The actress lost the last Lok Sabha election from Chandni Chowk constituency in Old Delhi, when she was defeated by Congressman Kapil Sibal.
In 2004, Smriti got involved in a controversy with Narendra Modi when she implied that Modi was responsible for the December 2004 Gujarat riots and should hence resign. However, after receiving flak from the party high commands, she apologised within two days.
After her defeat in 2004, the BJP is not taking a risk with Smriti again and that’s why she hasn’t been given a chance to contest this year. Initially, it was rumoured that she would contest the elections from Baramati, which is the constituency of Sharad Pawar, this year but at present she has not filled in any form.
Times seem to be tough for Tulsi Maiya. She was once the queen of the small screen, immortalising the character of Tulsi from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, but she is presently not seen on any shows. However, she does perform in a Gujarati play, where she plays the role of a producer-cum-actor. Her international project, based on Gandhi, has also been shelved due to recession.
