One would associate Smriti Irani with Tulsi who shed copious tears for seven long years, but she has now decided to make people laugh. “Do not forget that my TV carrier started with anchoring a comedy show named Bakeman’s Oh La La,” Smriti reminded us and added, “Shobhaji saw me there and asked me to talk to Ekta. For me it is like coming back to my roots. After doing soaps like Kyunki…, mythological, anchoring a reality show – doing a comedy serial, I thought would be a good idea.”
But she has a certain image with the viewers; wouldn’t they still love to see her in a family drama? She said, “I am doing this serial because it is very real and people will relate to it. It is not a slapstick comedy, it will bring a smile to people’s face. I would compare this serial with the genre of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films. His films had a human face and so does my serial.”

The show, to be aired on SAB TV, is about a woman who lives in Mumbai’s Walkeshwar Chawl with her husband and her kids. Her husband’s flourishing diamond business makes the family rich and they shift to up-market Malabar Hill. Smriti now has to strike a balance between her middle class values and be the snobish, fashionable and arrogant woman who lives in Malabar Hill. She also has to get into trendy and up-market clothes to please her husband. It is her journey from being behenji to mod that is replete with hilarious incidents.

Anuj Kapoor, Business Head of SAB TV said, “We were in touch with Smriti for some other project and were revamping our channel to make it into a comedy channel. She came up with this idea and now we are on with it. We will start shooting for the serial by Jan 2009 and will be airing it by Feb.”

Even as we were talking to her, Smriti was finalising her new Gujarati play. She said, “We are at a very initial phase of the drama. It is a Gujarati play, based in Gujarat. It is about what happens to the families of the people of that state who move out of India to earn money, leaving their family behind. It is a comedy play.”

In fact Nitin Vakharia, Heman Jha and Kalyani Thakkar – all actors from her play – are her co-actors in the serial too.
