Sai Deodhar, who was last seen in Ek Ladki Anjaani Si, has been roped in to play four powerful women of the Vedic period in Chandra Prakash Dwivedi’s Upanishad Ganga. Sai will play Savitri, Devyani, Nati and Gargi. The show revolves around a series of stories and teachings of the Upanishads and the Vedic times. A core team of Chinmaya Mission scholars have researched and conceptualised the show. The actors of the show include Sai, Abhimanyu Singh and a host of actors from New Delhi’s NSD (National School of Drama).
Says Sai, “I play four different characters, something I have never done before. It’s a period show and I am extremely nervous, I hope I will be able to pull it off. I have to speak Sanskrit and recite shlokas. I had to learn the language from Dwivediji and his wife. I play some of the strongest women of Indian history, they were all very learned and tough.”
The four women that Sai will play are —Savitri, who chose to marry a man who, she knew, had only a year to live. But because of her deep love for her husband and determination, Gods restored her husband to life.
Devyani, a young woman of great accomplishments, she was the first woman to learn about Sanjivani, the art of breathing life in a dead being. Gargi was the first woman pundit. Nati was a sutradhar, the anchor and narrator of a play.
The unit has been shooting in Mumbai and various parts of Rajasthan for the show. Elaborating on her experience and her look in the show Sai adds, “We shot in mud houses where there was no electricity, television and many other modern amenities, so we were completely cut-off from the world. I wear saris (called Kanchukis) that are draped in a different style, long hair let loose and minimal make up. It is an amazing experience.”
